With 2015 drawing to a close, CV-Library, is taking a look back on the year almost gone, and we can now reveal which cities have seen the strongest job growth so far this year. The results may come as a surprise to some!

The UK’s cities with the strongest job growth this year:

  1. Liverpool – 45.2%
  2. Edinburgh – 43.3%
  3. Cardiff – 38%
  4. Hull  - 34.1%
  5. Dundee  - 33.8%
  6. Manchester  - 31.3%
  7. Birmingham  - 31%
  8. Leeds  - 27.4%
  9. Glasgow  - 23.4%
  10. Bristol – 23.3%

What’s more, the data actually suggests that 2016 will see a further rise of career opportunities outside of London; great news for job hunters who aren’t keen to relocate to the capital and brave a daily commute on the Circle Line.

Cities north of the border have been going from strength to strength, with Glasgow and Dundee making it into the list, alongside Scotland’s capital city. Edinburgh, now considered to be a tech hub of the UK, enjoyed massive job growth of 43.3% in 2015, proving that you don’t have to be in London to be in the loop.

With cities from England, Scotland and Wales making the top ten, it’s fair to say that there were a few surprising entries; Hull, Dundee and Cardiff may not seem like the most obvious contenders for strong job growth.

These latest figures, however, are a real vote of confidence for Hull; with extensive plans for redevelopment, and preparations for the City of Culture 2017, the north-eastern city has been working its way up the list with job growth of 34.1%, which looks set to continue into 2016.

In a similar position is Dundee; the Scottish city has benefitted from strong growth, seeing an increase of 33.8%. This will likely continue into 2016, as the University of Dundee was named the best university in Scotland, attracting new students who will in turn contribute to the creation of new job roles.

Making its way into the top three cities is Cardiff, boasting job growth of 38% in 2015. Job hunters can certainly take comfort in the knowledge that there will continue to be strong job growth country-wide, affording them a variety of locations to settle down and start a career.

Ultimately, the Government still has a lot to address if the UK’s cities are going to successfully mirror the scale of work that is available in London. While no devolution deal was put into place in November’s autumn statement this year, the idea should still remain firmly on the table. It is certainly worth noting that while the matter of employment is still a reserved power when it comes to Scotland’s parliament, interestingly, powers surrounding economic development have already been devolved across the border.

Whether this has any bearing on the fact that three of Scotland’s six cities have made it into the list of 2015’s cities with the strongest job growth is very much up for debate. However, if local councils up and down the UK had more control over the decisions that affect their regions, this could work to boost UK job growth even further, resulting in the country’s economy thriving outside of London’s influence in years to come.
